The event, being organised by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) and the French Federation (FFME), is due to take place between September 14 and 18 at the AccorHotels Arena, with up to 18,000 spectators expected to attend. 

More than 500 climbers are expected to take part in an event which could mark the sport's first major event after its inclusion on the Olympic programme for Tokyo 2020.

Climbing is one of five sports recommended for inclusion, along with baseball and softball, karate, skateboarding and surfing.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is due to make a final decision at its Session on the eve of this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.  

The IFSC Climbing World Championships are held every two years and feature sport climbing, lead climbing, bouldering and speed climbing.

They were first organised in Frankfurt in 1991.

They were last held in Paris in 2012 when the IFSC held them a year after the event in Arco in Italy so as to switch it so the Championships took place in even years.
