Greece’s Grigorios Polychronidis moved to the brink of qualifying for the second round of the BC3 event at the International Sports Federation (BISFed) World Individual Boccia Championships after winning his second pool match in Beijing.

The 34-year-old, who won BC3 pair gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, defeated Japan’s Daiki Kosaka 4-3 on the opening day of competition at the China Administration Sports for Persons with Disabilities venue.

He was able to build on that with a narrow win against Singapore’s Sze Ning Toh, with the Greek cruising to a 5-1 victory over his Group C rival.

The result placed him top of the standings, with Portugal’s Luis Silva beating Kosaka 5-0 in the other match to take place to earn his first win of the Championships.

Should Polychronidis defeat the Portuguese player tomorrow, he would claim the sole qualification place from the four-person group.

London 2012 Paralympic champion Ye-Jin Choi faces a winner-takes-all tie with Brazil’s Evani Calado tomorrow, with both players having won their second straight match.

The South Korean defeated Portugal’s Jose Carlos Macedo on a tie-break after their contest ended 2-2, while Calado thrashed Belgium’s Kenneth Verwimp 7-0.

Reigning BC1 class Paralympic champion Pattaya Tadtong has no such concerns after advancing to the second round of competition despite not playing on the second day.

The Thai star’s qualification followed China’s Zhang Qi consigning Venezuela’s Jose Gregorio Pagua Herrera to a second defeat of the competition, by triumphing 8-2.

With the Venezuelan having played both of his Group D matches, Tadtong and Qi have already sealed the two qualification places with a victory apiece, ahead of their tie tomorrow.

Top seeded BC2 competitor Maciel de Sousa Santos enjoyed a rest day today, but will need to defeat Jeong Soyeong when he returns to action.

It followed the South Korean defeating Spain’s Manuel Angel Marti Perez 3-2, which saw him join Santos at the top of the Group A standings, with only one player progressing.
