Switzerland booked their place in the World Women’s Curling Championship final after defeating Japan 8-4 in the page 1-2 play-off game at the Credit Union iPlex in Swift Current in Saskatchewan.

The showdown on Sunday (March 27) will mark the fourth time in five years that Switzerland have contested the gold medal match in a World Women’s Curling Championship.

Japan will have a second chance to reach the final when they play the winner of tomorrow afternoon’s page 3-4 play-off between hosts Canada and Russia in tomorrow evening’s sole semi-final.

Switzerland opened with last stone advantage and in the first end, their skip Binia Feltscher hit-out a Japan stone to open the scoring with a single point.

The second end saw Japan skip Satsuki Fujisawa come up short with her last stone as Switzerland added to their score with a single steal.

Fujisawa tapped a Swiss stone off the button to score her team's first point in the third end and reduce Switzerland's lead to 2-1, but in the fourth Feltscher had a hit of her own to score one and re-establish her country’s two-point advantage.

Japan scored one more point in the fifth end and had a single-point steal in the sixth to level the score at 3-3.

Switzerland’s breakthrough came in the seventh end when Japan were short with their final effort, leaving Feltscher with a straightforward draw to score three points.

Japan could only score one in the eighth end and in the ninth, Feltscher had a draw to score two more points and take the score to 8-4 in Switzerland's favour, after which their opponents conceded.

"We feel just the best now," said Feltscher, gold medallist at the 2014 World Championships in Saint John in Canada.

"We have a medal and that was our big goal.

"So what comes, comes - gold or silver.

"We played a very good game and we gained a bit from mistakes by Japan because they don't have play-off experience.

"They made one small mistake and we took advantage."

The loser of the page 3-4 play-off will contest Sunday's bronze-medal game where they will face the beaten semi-finalist.
