Czech Republic’s David Drahoninsky broke the men’s W1 world record on the opening day of competition at the European Para-Archery Championships in Saint-Jean-de-Monts in France.

Great Britain’s John Walker came closest to matching the Czech with 653 points, one more than Finland’s Jean Pierre Antonios in third.

There was also a world record set in the women’s compound with the Russian trio Stepanida Artakhinova, Nona Alexandrova, Tatiana Andrievskaia managing scores of 678, 674 and 663 points respectively for a ground-breaking overall total of 2,015 out of a possible 2,160.

Action in the French seaside town is due to continue tomorrow with individual matches in the VI 2/3 division - visually impaired with stabiliser and without mask, without arm or sex distinction - and the Rio 2016 continental qualification tournament.

The event, which is set to conclude on Sunday (April 10), provides a second opportunity to secure a place at Rio 2016 following on from the World Para-Archery Championships held in the German town of Donaueschingen last August.

The third and final chance will come at the World Para-Archery Tournament, scheduled to take place in Nove Mesto in Czech Republic from June 13 to 19.
