Leading officials from the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) have taken part in the Arabian Gulf University's Fourth Annual Medical Student Conference by delivering various workshops and sessions during the three-day event.

The conference, held at the Al Jawhara Centre for Molecular Medicine, Genetics and Inherited Disorders in Salmaniya, was staged under the slogan “Sports Medicine”.

BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar was tasked with delivering the opening remarks at the event, where he spoke about his organisation’s commitment to developing sports medicine in the country.

They hope to build a sports medicine society in Bahrain who will share information and contribute to building a greater understanding of the topic in the region.

Askar underlined how they had already demonstrated their willingness to develop this area of medicine after Bahrain’s National Sports Medicine Centre in Isa Town opened a specialised sports medicine and injuries clinic last month.

The facility is the first of its kind for the Centre and was part of a BOC project.

The BOC National Sports Medicine Centre’s Francisco Chapman and Vladimir Suarez Felipe of Cuba then conducted workshop sessions for the participants, based around muscle examination.

Zaynab Anwar, a specialist on anti-doping, gave a session on the dangers to health for athletes who take banned substances and the threats on doping.

The final involvement from the BOC came when Sports Training and Development Centre Director and international instructor Nabeel Taha gave a presentation on psychological influence on injured athletes.

Around 600 people attended the conference, which was designed to shed light on the role of the sports medicine sector in managing and preventing sports-related injuries.

Other topics explored at the fourth annual event included how the correct physical activity can help prevent athletes from getting injured and the importance of the sports medicine in building healthy and active societies.
