Early progress for the 2019 Alpine Ski World Championships in Åre in Sweden have been praised following a visit there by the International Ski Federation (FIS) Coordination Group.

Åre were awarded the Championships in July 2014 ahead of Italian resort Cortina d'Ampezzo and this was the third visit of the Coordination Group, including representatives from the FIS, the Åre 2019 Local Organising Committee, Swedish Ski Association and the Town of Åre.

Infront Sports & Media, the FIS marketing agents, were also present.

Top of the agenda was the technical inspection by FIS race directors Atle Skaardal and Marcus Waldner, who took a look at the courses for the ladies’ and men’s races.

Åre, which is only 220 miles south of the Arctic Circle, is already an annual host of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup ladies’ tour and much of the infrastructure is already in place.

Swedish officials, though, are promising new exciting developments for both courses and facilities in the venue, which will also serve the future annual competitions in an even better way.

Organisers also outlined their latest steps, including the implementation of the Åre 2019 identity and logo and volunteer recruitment plans.

They also announced the construction of a new Main Press Centre, which will be located directly at the finish area.

“Åre hosted very good World Championships in 2007, and it is clear that the Organising Committee is well on track to build on that success in 2019," said Sarah Lewis, secretary general of the FIS.

"The excitement in the community is already evident such as volunteer recruitment for next year’s Junior World Championships already nearly complete."

Åre 2019 chief executive Niklas Carlsson is confident that preparations are well on track for the event due to take place in February that year.

It will be the third occasion it has hosted the Championships, having also previously staged them in 1954.

“We look forward to the long collaboration with FIS and the last two days of meetings point that we will have a very fruitful working relationship in the next three years in the lead-up to the World Championships,” he said.
