Russia topped the medals table at the second edition of the Asian Para-Taekwondo Open Championships, which took place in the Philippines’ capital Manila. 

Coming away with four golds, three silvers and five bronzes, Russia were followed in the standings by Iran with three golds, three silvers and a bronze, and then Mongolia with two golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Their athletes won golds in the men’s K41 up to 61 kilograms category, men's K41 over 75kg, men’s K44 over 75kg and women’s K44 up to 58kg. 

It was an all-Russian final in the women’s K44 up to 58kg as Ayshat Ramazanova edged team-mate Salimgereeva Mariyam 4-2.

Zainutdin Ataev cruised through his final against Iran’s Mohsen Abdi Sartang in the men’s K44 over 75kg, 10-1.

Gazzaev Sparktak and Vladislav Krichfalushiy topped the podiums in the respective men’s K41 up to 61kg and K41 over 75kg.

Iran were triumphant in the men’s K44 up to 75kg with reigning world champion and world number one Mahdi Pourrahnama taking the gold after defeating Russia’s Vitalii Nazarenko 6-3.

The country also tasted victory in the men’s K42 up to 61kg and K42 up to 75kg as Saeid Sadeghianpour got the better of Mongolia’s Shinebayar Batbayar in the former, and Mahmoud Jafarzadeh overcame Russia's Lukman-Khakim Istamulov in the latter.

Mongolian Khurelbaatar Enkhtuya was untouchable in her finals against Nepal’s Dhami Ranjana in the women’s K44 up to 49kg.

Team-mate Bolor-Erdene Ganbat, the reigning world champion, added another gold to his country’s count with a 15-3 victory over Iran’s Sajjad Javanbakht in the men’s K44 up to 61kg.

France also left with two golds thanks to Bopha Kong’s triumph in the men’s K43 up to 61kg and team-mate Laura Schiel’s 4-2 victory over Great Britain’s Amy Truesdale in the women’s K44 over 58kg.

Nyshan Omirali took gold for Kazakhstan in the men’s K42 over 75kg, defeating Iran’s Ahmad Narimani 5-2.

The event was the first of five continental Para-Taekwondo Open Championships set to take place this year with African, Pan American, European and Oceanian equivalents also due to be held.

The next continental event will be the first-ever African Championships, scheduled for May 22 in Egypt.
