France ended their home European Karate Championships in style as they clinched double gold to finish at the summit of the medals table in Montpellier today.

The host nation had enjoyed a successful outing heading into the final day and wrapped up top spot thanks to triumphs in the team kata and team kumite events.

The kumite side topped the podium after emerging from a hard-fought final clash with Turkey on the right side of a 3-1 scoreline.

In what was a fiercely-contested match-up, the French team just had enough to get over the winning line, sealing gold in dramatic fashion to the delight of the home crowd inside the arena.

Bronze in the team kumite went the way of the teams from Serbia and Portugal.

France's victory had come after their kata team-mates had also struck gold, overcoming arch-rivals Spain with a narrow 3-2 success.

The win for the kata side saw them avenge the defeats they suffered to Spanish karatekas in yesterday’s opening set of finals, where Damian Quintero beat home competitor Vu Duc Minh Dack to the men’s individual crown and Sandra Sanchez ousted France’s Sandy Scordo in the women’s final.

Turkey and Croatia finished on a positive note as both nations ended with team kata bronze.

Spain did have a gold medal to cheer as the event in Montpellier drew to a close, with their women’s team clinching the kata title.

In contrast to some of the other finals on the last day in the French city, the Spanish team dominated their gold medal clash with Germany as all five judges judged their routine to be better than that of their opponents.

Both Italy and Turkey picked up bronze in the discipline.

Following star performer Rafael Aghayev’s success yesterday, Azerbaijan added another title to their haul as their women won the team kumite competition by beating Croatia 9-6.

France earned bronze alongside Turkey.

The French contingent in Montpellier finished at the top of the standings with six golds, two silvers and three bronze in front of Spain, whose final tally of six medals included four golds.
