Britain’s Grace Reid and Tom Daley earned the host nation’s first gold medal of the LEN European Aquatics Championships after triumphing in the mixed three metre synchronised springboard event here today.

The pairing began the competition in solid fashion with two strong opening dives, however it only proved enough to place them third in the standings, behind the Italian and Russian teams.

Reid and Daley, who won Olympic 10m platform bronze at the venue at London 2012, got stronger as the competition progressed with their fourth dive earning 76.26, which would prove the highest score of the night.

It moved the duo to the top of the overall standings ahead of the final dive and the home pairing held their nerve to finish the competition strongly.

Their final score of 321.06 proved more than enough to claim gold ahead of Italy’s Maicol Verzotto and Tania Cagnotto, who secured silver on 308.70.

The podium was completed by Russia’s Nadezhda Bazhina and Nikita Shleikher, after they scored 305.28.

Although she was forced to settle for silver in the mixed competition, Cagnotto, who last year became the first Italian to win a world diving title, justified her status as the favourite in the one metre springboard to secure the 18th European title of her career.

A poor second dive had put her hopes at risk, but the 30-year-old responded with strong third and fourth round efforts to head into the finale in the lead, ahead of her compatriot Elena Bertocchi.

Despite her team-mate finishing with a stronger final dive, Cagnotto held on to secure her seventh European title in the discipline by ending on a score of 284.15.

Bertocchi earned silver having scored 281.30, with Russia’s Nadezhda Bazhina rounding off the podium on 280.75.

Russian synchronised swimming continued at the Championships after Olympic champions Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina debuted a new routine to good effect to earn their third continental title in the duet event here today.

The pair, crowned world champions last year in Kazan, performed their mermaid-inspired routine as they stepped up preparations for the defence of their Olympic title at Rio 2016.

They will be buoyed by the response of the judges, who awarded them the highest execution, artistic impression and difficulty scores of the competition, to see the pair emerge as clear winners on 96.9000 points

Ukraine’s Lolita Ananasova and Anna Voloshyn claimed the silver medals after scoring 93.333 points and Italy’s Linda Cerruti and Constanza Ferro finished with 91.2667 to secure the bronze.

Russia’s monopoly of gold medals in synchronised swimming events continued when Aleksandr Maltsev and Mikhaela Kalancha triumphed in the mixed duet free competition.

Maltsev had earned the inaugural World Championship title in the event with Darina Valitova last year and was vying to make further history by scooping the maiden European gold.

Performing first in the competition Maltsev and Kalancha put themselves out of reach of their opponents by earning a score of 90.4667 points.

A strong performance from Giorgio Minisini and Mariangela Perrupato saw the pair finish closest the Russian duo to win the silver medal on 87.4667.

Pau Ribes and Berta Ferreras scored 86.5667 to finish third and earn Spain’s first medal at the Championships.
