Melissa Tapper, who in March became the first Australian to qualify to compete at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, has started her campaign at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Australian Open with two victories at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Tapper, who has Erb's palsy which has caused paralysis in her right arm, beat fellow Australian Ju-Fang Hsueh 11-5, 11-5, 11-9, 11-4 in qualification group four before overcoming Fiji’s Sally Yee 11-3, 11-3, 11-3, 11-1.

It sets up a decider with Taiwan's Nai-I Hsiung, who followed up an 11-9, 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 win over Yee by defeating Hsueh 11-3, 11-5, 11-8, 11-9.

The pair will face off tomorrow, while Yee and Hsueh will go up against each other in a battle to avoid finishing last.

Other Australians to win two games out of two in the women’s singles today were Jiamuwa Wu, Kai Peng and Michelle Beaumont.

Wu tops group six after beating compatriot Ying Meng 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-5 and Singapore’s Herng Hwee Yee 11-9, 11-7, 3-11, 11-3, 11-8.

Peng is setting the pace in group seven alongside Japan's Yuka Umemura thanks to wins over fellow countrywoman Deniz Yener - 11-3, 11-7, 11-1, 11-3 - and Fiji’s Grace Rosi Yee - 11-4, 11-1, 11-4, 11-3.

Beaumont is the group eight frontrunner courtesy of victories at the expense of Australia’s Chermaine Quah - 8-11, 11-3, 11-4, 11-1, 11-5 - and New Zealand’s Ruofei Rao - 11-3, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9.

David Segal was among the home hopes to get off the mark at the first time of asking in the men’s singles, downing countryman George Maksacheff 11-4, 9-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-5, 11-2 in group one.
