Fifth seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk suffered a shock defeat at the hands of South Korea’s Lee Jang-mi as action continued today at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Chinese Taipei Open Grand Prix Gold.

Lee established an early lead against her Thai opponent and never looked back, decimating Buranaprasertsuk’s defence on her way to a 21-15, 21-12 victory in 34 minutes.

The result was one of the few upsets on a day when the majority of the seeded women’s players progressed into the second round.

Buranaprasertsuk’s compatriot Busanan Ongbumrungpan, the number six seed, advanced with a 21-12, 18-21, 21-11 win over Chiang Mei Hui of Taiwan.

Others to progress were Nitchaon Jindapol, a 21-18, 21-15 victor at the expense of Singapore’s Xiaoyu Liang, and Pornpawee Chochuwong, who defeated Taiwan’s Shih Jyun Jhou 21-19, 16-21, 21-18.

South Korea’s Kim Na Young beat Australia’s Jennifer Tam 21-10, 21-10 to set up a meeting tomorrow with number one seed Wang Shixian of China, a 21-14, 21-16 winner against home favourite Hung Shih Han.

Wang’s compatriots Chen Yufei and Sun Yu, the number three seed, overcame Indonesia’s Fitriani Fitriani - 21-14, 21-16 - and Australia’s Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen - 21-9, 21-16 - respectively.

The first two rounds of the men’s singles were also held today as number 13 seed Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin of Malaysia overcame Indonesia's Firman Abdul Kholik 21-19, 21-11 before defeating Singapore’s Derek Wong Zi Liang 21-10, 21-14.

"I’m happy with the win as I had lost in the early rounds in Indonesia and Australia," said Zainuddin.

"Of course it was very tiring today, having to play two matches.

"I didn’t get much of a break."

Awaiting Zainuddin in the third round is fellow Malaysian Daren Liew, who followed up a 21-12, 21-19 win over Chinese Taipei’s Kuo Ching-Hung by beating another home favourite, Shih Kuei Chun, 21-18, 21-14.

Among tomorrow’s other third-round encounters is a match between fifth seed Chou Tien-Chen of Taiwan and ninth seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.

Chou beat Indonesia’s Fikri Ihsandi Hadmadi 21-12, 21-8 and Malaysia’s Giap Chin Goh 21-14, 21-18 today, while Ponsana defeated South Korea’s Seung Jae Seo 21-18, 21-18 and China's Huang Yuxiang 21-14, 21-18.
