The recruitment programme will last until the end of September.

Potential volunteers can apply online via a special website, which is due to go live tomorrow.  

Anyone older than 18 is eligible and organisations with 50 or more members may apply in the group recruitment category. 

Among the areas of expertise that Pyeongchang 2018 are looking for are Games information, operational support, media support, technology, protocol/language services and sport and medical services. 

After a screening process, selected volunteers will be required to go through field training sessions and classes designed to offer the best possible service during the Games. 

Uniforms, accommodation, meals, insurance coverage and other benefits will be provided to all volunteers.

A total of 22,400 volunteers will be trained.

That is slightly less than the 25,000 who worked at Sochi 2014. 

Today, Kim Heung-soo, a former ski jumper who represented South Korea in two Olympic Games now and a Pyeongchang 2018 sport manager, demonstrated howto apply to become a volunteer.

The event’s highlight was the signing of Memorandum of understandings with several groups, including representatives of eight schools, four volunteer organisations, and JecheonCity.

Each will provide workers in the group recruitment category. 

"Volunteers stand at the frontline of service to every visitor and guest of the Pyeongchang 2018 WinterGames, and their performance will help define the image of Pyeongchang 2018," Pyeongchang 2018 President Lee Hee-beom said.

"It is with great pleasure and expectation that we begin the search for our volunteers, and I sincerely believe that Pyeongchang will be able to provide the best service ever with the volunteers.” 

Among the leading South Korean officials to attend the launch was Minister of the Interior Hong Yun-sik

"I have firm belief in the Korean people’s patriotic spirit," he said.
