Last year’s third-place finishers Spain defeated fifth seeds Germany 3-0 to book their place in the second round of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Beach Tennis World Team Championship at Russia’s National Tennis Centre in Moscow.

Pilar Escandell and Rosa Sitja set the Spaniards on their way to victory, coming from behind to defeat Dorothee Berreth and Maraike Biglmaier 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the women’s doubles.

This was followed by a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win for Gerard Rodriguez and Saulo Tejada against Nils Muschiol and Benjamin Ringsltetter in the men’s doubles.

Rodriguez and Sitja then combined in the mixed doubles to defeat Oliver Munz and Berreth 0-4, 5-3, 4-1.

Also picking up 3-0 first-round wins today were Switzerland, Lithuania and seventh seeds France against Chile, Cyprus and Tunisia respectively.

Sixth seeds Venezuela were made to work hard, however, for their victory against San Marino.

Alice Grandi and Camilla Zafferani overcame Lady Correa and Patricia Diaz 6-4, 6-3 to put San Marino into a 1-0 lead.

Venezuela fought back though with Ali Colmenares and Ramon Guedez beating Nicolo Bombini and Alvise Galli 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 before Guedez and Diaz defeated Bombini and Galli 6-2, 7-5.

The only other seeded team to suffer elimination today along with Germany was eighth-ranked Slovenia, who lost 2-1 against the United States. 

A record total of 33 nations are taking part in the fifth edition of the ITF Beach Tennis World Team Championship

The World Team Championship and the individual ITF Beach Tennis World Championships are the flagship events on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour.
