They were followed into the semi-finals by Germany, who took second spot in the group after they picked up two wins on day three.

Germany proved too strong for Spain in the opening contest on the third day of action at the De Oosteveren Sport Hall, emerging with a 9-4 triumph, before they accounted for Switzerland in their final game.

In what proved to be a straight shoot-out between for the final available place in the last four, the Germans had the edge for the majority of the encounter and prevailed with an 8-3 success.

In Group B, second seeds Belgium recovered from their surprise defeat at the hands of Italy yesterday as they squeezed through to the next round by overcoming Denmark 7-2.

The Belgians’ participation in the semi-finals was hanging by a thread after they could only manage a thrilling 5-5 draw with Finland last night but they were able to see off the Danes to prolong their stay in the Dutch town.

Italy sealed second semi-final berth in Group B as they usurped Belgium into first place by earning the point they required to qualify in their clash with Finland.

The Scandinavian team knew they had to win to progress but were held to a 3-3 draw, which saw them miss out on the next round.

The Netherlands will take on Belgium in the semi-finals, while Italy will entertain Germany.

Both matches, along with the other play-off contests, are due to be held tomorrow.
