The Americans, the silver medallists behind Japan at the last two editions, were far too strong for their rivals, who were playing their first World Championship match.

In the first inning, the US combined five hits to score nine runs.

Amanda Chidester hit a three-run triple and Kasey Cooper followed with a two-run home run. 

Two walks then allowed Haylie McCleney and Kelsey Stewart to add to the tally.

Four more runs arrived in the second inning before the Pool B game was brought to a halt after the third.

Elsewhere in the group, Brazil thrashed Austria 11-0.

Hosts Canada also began with a victory as they saw off Great Britain 3-0 in Pool D, with Uganda beating Ireland 12-8 in the other match in the group.

Venezuela beat France 7-0 in Pool A, a three-team group which also contains Japan who will begin tomorrow.

In Pool C, Australia, who were third at the last World Championships two years ago, lost 2-0 to Mexico.

Switzerland edged Serbia 13-10 in the other Pool C game.

Chinese Taipei beat Ecuador in Pool E, 11-0, which also saw Puerto Rico breeze past India 25-0.

In Pool F, The Netherlands were 7-0 winners over Pakistan while The Philippines beat Czech Republic 1-0.

China beat Guatemala 7-0 in Pool H, which also saw Cuba ease past Greece 8-1.
