Two National Hockey League (NHL) players have been named in Austria’s squad for a training camp ahead of the final qualifying tournament for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang in September.

Michael Grabner, who plays for the New York Rangers, and Michael Raffl of the Philadelphia Flyers are the headline names selected for the camp due to begin on August 21.

Veteran Thomas Vanek, who has extensive experience in the NHL and now plays for the Detroit Red Wings, has not been called up.

A reason for his omission has not been given by Austrian coach Alpo Suhonen.

Three players from Swedish clubs and one from a Swiss team will join the remaining players who compete in the Austrian Hockey League at the training camp.

The team, made up of three goaltenders, 10 defencemen and 16 forwards, will first meet up in Vienna before they are due to take on Slovakia in an exhibition game on August 24.

Their preparations for the Final Olympic Qualification in Latvian capital Riga is scheduled to conclude with games against Norway in Oslo on August 27 and 28.

“It is important that players like Grabner and Raffl will be back again,” Suhonen said.

“In the last tournaments we had issues in front of the net and scored too few goals.

“In Grabner and Raffl we have two players who have proven their scoring abilities in the NHL.

“That will also take pressure away from other players who can better unfold their game.”

Austria are due to compete in Group E of the Final Olympic Qualification for Pyeongchang 2018 alongside hosts Latvia, Germany and Japan.

The tournament, where the group winners will secure a spot at the Games in South Korea, is scheduled to take place from September 1 to 4.

Finland, Sweden, Canada, Russia, United States, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Slovakia and the host country South Korea have already sealed their respective Olympic places.
