Beijing 2022 have launched a worldwide competition to find logo designers to create an emblem and launched their new website to mark the first anniversary of being awarded the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Chinese capital's top official Guo Jinlong, the chairman of Beijing 2022, made the announcement on the Badaling section of the Great Wall a special event.

Beijing were awarded the Games at the International Olympic Committee Session in Kuala Lumpur.

They beat Kazakhstan city Almaty by 44 votes to 40.

Designers interested in helping create the emblem have until November 30 to submit their entries.

The website of Beijing 2022 was also officially launched, offering news, introductions to winter sports and photos.

The site is available in Chinese, English and French.

Both Olympic and Paralympic identities will need to reference the Games and broader Chinese culture, according to Beijing 2022 which hopes the identity will be “globally accepted” and “demonstrate the Chinese image to the world.”

The identity will need to capture the Olympic and Paralympic spirit and embody the culture and values of the host city and country.

Furthermore the logos need to be inspiring and show that they can be recognised by  domestic and international communities, according to organisers.

Designs will need to stand up to the requirements of television broadcasters, visual effects and digital platforms.

A series of key words and phrases have been given as broad guidelines for designers.

These include running the Games in a “green, open, shared and honest manner”, the idea of “millions of people participating in winter sports,” as well as sustainable development and cues such as “cohesion, sport, strength,” and “world, reunion, festival”.

"The emblem is the most important visual image element of the Olympic Games and constitutes the basis of the Olympic Games branding system," Han Zirong, general secretary of Beijing 2022, said.

"It tells the stories of the Olympic Games and conveys the culture and ideologies of the hosting nations."

Han also claimed that the logo should signify the "perfect unity of nationality, art and creativity".

Beijing is going to be home to the ice events.

Zhangjiakou in Hebei, located nearly 200 kilometers northwest of Beijing, will host the snow events.

A high-speed rail line linking the two cities is now under construction.

Han revealed that Beijing 2022 is sending a team of 80 officials to be official observers at Rio 2016.

"These observers have already studied some of the key issues and difficulties that could be associated with the 2022 Winter Olympics, as well as some of the problems that could be involved in the 2022 Winter Games themselves," she said.

"We expect our group in Rio is going to definitely bring back some useful information and experience."
