Sri Lanka's off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake has been fined for breaching the International Cricket Council's Code of Conduct during his side's Twenty20 international defeat to Australia in Pallekele on Tuesday (September 6).

The 31-year-old will have to forfeit 30 per cent of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching rules relating to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his dismissal during an international match".

The incident happened in the fifth over of Australia’s innings when Senanayake, after dismissing visiting skipper David Warner, "made remarks which could have provoked a reaction from the Australia captain".

Senanayake bowled Warner for 28, and later admitted his offence, meaning there was no need for a formal hearing.

Warner is no stranger to controversial incidents but the pair were seen shaking hands at the end of the game.

The charge had been laid by on-field umpires Ranmore Martinesz and Raveendra Wimalasiri, third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge and fourth umpire Deepal Gunawardene.

The Sri Lankans were heavily beaten in the match after Australia posted a massive 263-3 - a world record for a Twenty20 international.

Glenn Maxwell did most of the damage with 145 runs from just 65 balls as the tourists won by 85 runs.

Sri Lanka were restricted to just 178-9.
