World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) President Chungwon Choue urged a host of philanthropists and people from the world of business to partner with the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) at the 2016 China Charity Fair.

The annual event, held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre, is the only national-level, comprehensive charity event in China.

Proceedings opened with a video message from United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, while Choue was the only figure from the sporting world invited.

During proceedings Choue delivered a presentation under the topic "Empowering the World’s Most Powerless Children".

After discussing the establishment of the THF with the attendees, he detailed prior programmes among earthquake victims in Nepal and in Syrian refugee camps in Turkey and Jordan.

Choue also revealed that future programmes are planned for Rwanda, Ethiopia and Colombia.

The THF, established by the WTF, aims to teach the sport and related educational programmes to refugees and displaced persons worldwide.

Choue claimed that the sport is ideal for those in bleak economic conditions as it requires no real investment.

"It requires no playing field and no equipment - just the human body," he said.

"It is cost-effective, easy to deploy and not difficult to learn."

The South Korean also detailed the exercise benefits of taekwondo, as well as its teaching of etiquette.

"Taekwondo demands courage, offers discipline and delivers self-defense and self-belief," he said.

"These are critical gifts for refugees who may suffer from low self-esteem."

Choue ended his speech by asking Non-Government Organisations and philanthropists to "join hands" with the THF, thereby giving some hope to some of the world’s least fortunate children.

After his time on stage, Choue signed a cooperation agreement with Dr. Dezhi Lu, chairman of the Huamin Charity Foundation.

Lu agreed to fully support the THF.
