Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú produced another classy performance to claim four gold medals on the opening day of action at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup in Doha.

Having dominated the first five legs of the series in Paris-Chartres, Berlin, Moscow, Beijing and Dubai, Hosszú showed no signs of letting up at the Hamad Aquatic Centre in Qatar’s capital.

The 27-year-old’s first victory of the day came in the women’s 200 metres freestyle, clocking a time of 1 min 53.29sec to beat nearest challenger Madeline Groves of Australia by 1.17 seconds and fellow Hungarian Zsuzsanna Jakabos by a further 0.21 seconds.

A time of 26.38 in the women’s 50m backstroke proved enough to secure Hosszú’s second win as Ukraine’s Daryna Zevina finished runner-up in 26.53 and China’s Cheng Haihua took third spot in 27.01.

There were also victories for the Iron Lady in the women’s 200m individual medley and the women’s 800m freestyle with times of 2:05.77 and 8:27.58 respectively.

Russia’s Yuliya Efimova came second in the 200m individual medley in 2:07.29, with Jakabos having to settle for the bronze medal in 2:08.42.

China’s Fang Yi was the biggest threat to Hosszú in the 800m freestyle, touching home in 8:30.29 to finish second ahead of Jakabos in 8:31.27.

Russia’s Vladimir Morozov, the leader of the men’s rankings, continued to impress by coming away with two gold medals.

A time of 45.77 saw him win the men’s 100m freestyle with South Africa’s Chad le Clos second in 46.00 and Japan’s Katsumi Nakamura third in 46.83.

Morozov followed this up with victory in the men’s 100m individual medley, posting a time of 51.75 to better runner-up Philip Heintz of Germany by 0.52 seconds and third-placed Pavel Sankovich of Belarus by 0.93 seconds.
