China's Jinhong Zhao dominated the women's 48kg division as the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth World Championships began in Penang today.

The 15-year-old achieved the hat-trick of the overall, snatch and clean and jerk titles after a powerful display of lifting in Malaysia.

Her snatch lift of 80kg was by far the best lift in the opening discipline and earned her the first gold, with Chinese Taipei's Wan-Ling Fang taking silver with an effort of 74kg.

Bronze went to Turkey's Ayse Dogan who lifted 69kg with her final attempt.

Zhao then won the clean and jerk with a lift of 95kg, edging out Thailand's Chiraphan Nanthawong who managed 94kg for silver.

The Thai's effort came after she failed with all three of her snatch attempts, meaning she was out of the running for the overall medals.

Fang was the third best in the clean and jerk with an 88kg lift, which gave her second place overall with a total of 162kg.

That was someway adrift of Zhao's winning combined score of 175kg.

Bronze overall went to American Hayley Marie Reichardt who was fourth in both disciplines, lifting a combined 152kg.

Dogan was seventh in the clean and jerk to drift out of contention.

In the women's 44kg category, Colombia's Andrea Manuela Berrio Zuluaga had a similarly dominant day to win all three gold medals available.

She claimed the snatch title with an effort of 67kg, before adding the clean and jerk gold with a lift of 87kg.

That gave her the overall crown with a total of 154kg.

Indonesia's Nur Vinatasari won all three silver medals after lifting 66kg in the snatch and 78kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 144kg.

All three bronzes also went to the same weightlifter, with Rosiells Coromoto Quintana Mendoza lifting a combined 139kg for Venezuela.

That came thanks to 62kg in the snatch and 77kg in the clean and jerk.

In the men's 50kg class, Vietnam's Nguyen Quoc Bao Le finished second in the snatch and third in the clean and jerk, which was enough for the overall gold medal.

He ended up with a combined total of 211kg to beat the rest of the field.

Snatch champion Natthawat Chomchuen of Thailand had to settle for second overall after he could only back up his winning lift of 96kg with fifth place in the clean and jerk.

He finished on the same total as Le, 211kg, but took silver thanks to his heavier bodyweight.

Oman's Ahmed Salim Said Al-Habsi won his country's first gold medal at the Championships by taking the clean and jerk title with an effort of 120kg.

He was fifth in the snatch and fourth overall, with the combined bronze going to Colombia's Jairo Luis Garcia Perez, who was fourth in the snatch and second in the clean and jerk.

He lifted a combined 209kg, one kg more than Al-Habsi.
