The United States’ Clarence Cummings Jr set a youth world record in the clean and jerk today on his way to claiming the men’s 69 kilograms overall crown at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth World Championships in Penang.

Cummings Jr managed a lift of 182kg, which added to his winning snatch effort of 135kg, gave him an unrivalled total of 317kg at the SPICE Arena in the Malaysian city.

It bettered the 180kg he set at the 2016 IWF Junior World Championships in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi in June, when he posted the same total of 317kg - the current youth world record.

Iran’s Hossein Soltani was the overall runner-up in Penang after finishing third in the snatch with 131kg and second in the clean and jerk with 164kg for a total of 295kg.

Rounding out the podium was Turkey’s Ferhat Ali Yazici, who came second in the snatch with 133kg and fourth in the clean and jerk with 158kg for a total of 291kg.

Romania’s Paul Dumitrascu claimed the bronze medal in the clean and jerk with 163kg, but finished fourth overall with 284kg after managing only 121kg in the snatch.

Today’s other winner in men’s competition was Uzbekistan’s Adkhamjon Ergashev, who triumphed in the 62kg division.

Ergashev won the snatch with a lift of 125kg and, despite coming second in the clean and jerk with 155kg, his total of 280kg proved enough for victory.

China’s Wei Yunban finished second overall with 276kg after coming fourth in the snatch with 120kg and first in the clean and jerk with 156kg.

Completing the top three was Russia’s Zulfat Garaev, second in the snatch with 124kg and fourth in the clean and jerk with 149kg for a total of 273kg.

Colombia’s Edwin Andres Lagarejo Mosquera took the bronze medal in the snatch with 121kg, while South Korea’s Shin Bi came third in the clean and jerk with 150kg.

In the women’s 58kg category, Turkey’s Aysegul Cakin came out on top with a total of 184kg after finishing second in the snatch with 80kg and first in the clean and jerk with 104kg.

Runner-up Mariia Tymoshchuk of Ukraine came first in the snatch with 82kg, but dropped to third in the clean and jerk with 100kg for a total of 182kg.

Third place went to Peru’s Eldi Jhasmin Paredes Vasquez, who finished fifth in the snatch with 75kg and second in the clean and jerk with 102kg for a total of 177kg.

A lift of 77kg earned Mexico’s Cristal Guadalupe Ponciano Rodriguez a bronze medal in the snatch, however, he narrowly missed out on a place on the overall podium after coming fourth in the clean and jerk with 99kg for a total of 176kg.
