United States' Kelsi Worrell surprised Jeanette Ottesen and Katinka Hosszu to win the women's 100 metres butterfly title on the opening day of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup in Tokyo.

Hungarian superstar Hosszu did win four titles on the first of two days of competition in the Japanese capital to further tighten her grip on the overall World Cup crown.

She clocked 1min 53.34 to triumph in the 200m freestyle before a time of 26.53 saw her touch first in the 50m backstroke.

A third gold followed courtesy of a 200m individual medley victory in 2:04.56 before a fourth in the 200m backstroke in 2:01.72.

It continues the dominant form the three-time Olympic champion has shown on the World Cup circuit in recent weeks.

But she was unable to follow the butterfly victory she had claimed last week in Singapore, breaking a run of five successive defeats to Denmark's Ottesen.

Worrell took control of the race early-on in the Tatsumi International Swimming Center before pulling clear to take a first World Cup win of this year's series in 55.84.

Ottesen managed 55.91 for second while Hosszu rounded-off the podium in 56.02.

Japan’s Rikako Ikee set a junior world record to finish fourth in 56.42.

Russia's overall men's World Cup leader Vladimir Morozov was also beaten today, although it was less of a surprise.

Australia's Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers broke his own world junior record to win in 46.12, three hundredths of a second ahead of the Russian.

Morozov did return to the pool to win the 100m individual medley in a blistering 50.55.

Local star Daiya Seto was another day one winner, beating South African world record holder Chad le Clos in a time of 1:49.93 in the 200m butterfly.

He followed that up with a 400m individual medley success in 4:03.42.
