An interim committee has been appointed to oversee the management of Taekwondo PNG after the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNG) suspended the organisation following the resignation of President Peter Miria and other key officials.

The PNGOC have endorsed the choice of John Cholai as the interim head of the national governing, with Justin Worinu selected as secretary and Abel Pondek as treasurer.

The committee will be responsible for the day-to-day running of Taekwondo PNG, currently serving a third suspension from the PNGOC, for a period of six to 12 months.

They will aim to finalise a new constitution, regulations and policies in consultation with the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and Oceania Taekwondo Union (OTU).

A special general meeting was due to be held on November 5 in the wake of the organisation’s expulsion from the PNGOC but this has been deferred following the endorsement of the interim committee.

A meeting is set to take place at the end of the transitional period, where a new executive will be elected and the constitution will be adopted.

The PNGOC claim they have taken the measures "with the recommendation of WTF and OTU to restore and strengthen TPNG governance and management for the best interest of the sport"

Taekwondo PNG’s suspension was announced by the PNGOC earlier this month amid ongoing governance issues within the body.

The PNGOC said they did not "meet constitutional requirements" and ceased to be "legally constituted without a functioning executive following the resignation of its president and other core executive members".

"PNGOC is working in close consultation with the WTF through OTU to re-establish the National Federation to ensure Taekwondo PNG is properly functioning under a Constitution that is compliant with WTF and meets PNGOC Constitutional requirements," a statement confirming the suspension read.

Taekwondo PNG had previously been suspended from the PNGOC in 1997 and 2011.

The organisation was also exiled by the sport's worldwide governing body in 1997.

PNGOC President Sir John Dawanincura said: "The suspension of Taekwondo PNG is an indication that those involved in the sport need to seriously consider the future of taekwondo and elect the right people to take the sport forward."
