Japan enjoyed two crushing wins on home territory as water polo action begun the Asian Swimming Championships in Tokyo today.

The men proved to be far too strong for The Philippines in Group B as they recorded a crushing 36-0 win at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium's indoor pool.

Kouhei Inaba top-scored with five goals in the rout as the Japanese scored 11 goals in the first two quarters, eight in the third and then six in the fourth.

The Japanese finished 12th and last at Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after qualifying for the first time since Los Angeles 1984.

In the other game in Group B, China beat Saudi Arabia 14-3.

Group A saw a big win for Kazakhstan, who eased past Hong Kong 26-1.

Iran beat Singapore 8-4 in the other clash in the group.

In the women's competition, Japan crushed Thailand 18-2 for an opening day success.

Only one group is being contested, with China beating Singapore 23-2 first-up.

Kazakhstan thrashed Hong Kong 22-1. 

Water polo competition will take all the attention for the opening three days of the Championships, with the event due to take place until Sunday (November 20).

The remaining events - swimming, synchronised swimming and diving - are scheduled to begin on Thursday (November 17) in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games host city.
