United States continued their World Sledge Hockey Challenge title defence with a convincing 8-0 victory over Norway at the MacLauchlan Arena in Charlottetown in Canada.

The American team had claimed a 4-0 victory over South Korea in their opening match of the tournament but produced an even more dominant display in their second tie.

Two goals from Declan Farmer came either side of an effort from Kevin McKee to give the reigning champions a 3-0 advantage, which Rico Roman added to before the end of the first period.

Norway restricted the United States to one goal in the second period, despite continuing to come under pressure, with McKee firing in his second of the match.

A brace from Brody Roybal and a solitary effort by Adam Page in the third period saw the United States cruise to a straightforward victory.

Their next opponents have also triumphed in their opening matches, with hosts Canada thrashing South Korea.

The omens did not look promising for the Asian nation – added to the World Sledge Hockey Challenge for the first time in 2013 as they bid for experience before Pyeongchang 2018 – when Brad Bowden scored after just 20 seconds for Canada.

A further five shots flew into the South Korean net during the period, leaving them facing a damage limitation exercise for the remainder of the contest.

Canada scored twice in the second and third periods of the game to reach double figures but Jong-Ho Jang scored South Korea’s first goal of this year’s tournament to end the match at 10-1.

Bowden was star player of the match, the Canadian scoring twice and assisting a further four goals.

The round robin phase of the tournament is due conclude tomorrow with South Korea and Norway looking for their first victories, while Canada and the United States will face off in the battle of the unbeaten teams.
