Saudi Arabian football legend Mohammed Noor has been banned for four years for doping after a successful FIFA appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The 38-year-old midfielder, one the country's best known names in the sport, failed a drugs test in November 2015 for banned substance amphetamine.

Both Noor's A and B samples tested positive and he was subsequently banned for four years by a Saudi Arabian Anti-Doping hearing panel.

Noor, who plays for Saudi club side Al-Ittihad, challenged this decision and an appeal panel ruled on April 17 of this year that the suspension he had served up until this point was "sufficient".

That meant he was free to resume his football career, but FIFA has now been successful with its appeal which called for the reinstatement of the four-year penalty.

A hearing took place at the CAS headquarters in Lausanne in Switzerland before today's verdict.

"The Panel found that the player failed to identify any basis for impugning the reliability or accuracy of the testing laboratory’s analysis of his A and B sample," a CAS statement said.

"Moreover, the player could not identify any particular deviation from the WADA International Standards for Laboratories.

"Therefore, the appropriate sanction for the player's anti-doping rule violation is a four-year period of ineligibility."

At 38, the four year ban could signal the end of Noor's career.

He played for Al-Ittihad for 20 years from 1993 before leaving for a short spell at fellow Saudi club Al-Nassr.

In 2014 he returned to Al-Ittihad, who he has won the Saudi Premier League title with on seven occasions.

Noor has also won the Asian Football Confederation's Champions League, the continent's top club competition, twice.

He has been capped 96 times by his country and played at the FIFA World Cup in 2002 and 2006.
