Despite the tricky weather in Copper Mountain, the duo managed to pull off some fantastic moves on the pipe on their way to topping the podiums.

Burgener’s score of 96.25 points pushed him ahead of Swiss team-mate and 2014 Winter Olympic champion Iouri Podladtchikov by 0.25, while Chase Josey completed the top three on home snow with a total of 93.75.

In the women’s contest, Kim, winner of two gold medal at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, had a more comfortable win as she scored 95.50, putting her 4.5 points in front of Jiayu Liu of China.

Another Chinese boarder, Xuetong Cai, finished third on 89.25 points. 

After the first two runs, Podladtchikov was leading the group of 10 who had qualified for the men’s final in the Colorado resort.

He looked to have secured the win going into the third run, but just he dropped in, Burgener turned the competition on its head after landing a frontside 1080, cab 1080 double cork, frontside 900, backside 360 and the first switch backside double to leap ahead.

Podladtchikov landed back-to-back 900s and double corks before a final alley oop backside rodeo, but this was not enough for him to take victory away from Burgener.

"I never thought I could pull off the switch backside double 1080 here in these conditions," said Burgener afterwards.

"But I wanted to win, that was my wish.”

Kim dominated the women’s competition with a strong performance in her second run, where she landed a method to frontside 900, Mctwist and back-to-back 720s.

“I’m super stoked," said the three-time Winter X Games gold medallist.

"I’m glad that I was able to put some runs down in these kind of snowy conditions.

"I had to make some adjustments to my run and it’s hard to mentally ignore the snow or the fact that your snowboard is going slower than usual."

The Snowboard Freestyle World Cup tour is due continue tomorrow with the men’s and women’s Big Air finals taking place.
