Canada produced a phenomenal second period on home ice as they scored four goals on the way to an emphatic 5-0 win over Slovakia on the second day of the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men's World Junior Championship.

The hosts got their Group B campaign off to a good start yesterday, beating 2016 runners-up Russia 5-3 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, and made it two wins from two today.

Five different players scored the Canadians' goals at the same venue while Connor Ingram enjoyed a quiet game between the posts, stopping just six harmless shots.

Only when Russia limited Belarus to six shots in 2000 has a team had so few efforts in the tournament's history.

It was not until the second period that the deadlock was finally broken after a swift counter attack.

Tyson Jost carried the puck but, as the defence closed in on him, he passed it back to Jeremy Lauzon who was advancing on goal.

Lauzon had a moment to take aim and unleashed a fierce shot over the shoulder of Adam Huska.

Less than six minutes later, Canada doubled their lead courtesy of a power play goal.

This time it was a nice pass from behind the net by Pierre-Luc Dubois to Taylor Raddysh who doubled his country's lead.

Canada extended its advantage to 3-0 through Anthony Cirelli before Thomas Chabot made it four.

Michael McLeod added a fifth Canada goal in the third period to wrap up a second win in as many days.

"Everyone knows the depth we have on this team," said McLeod.

"We have shut-down guys who have great scoring ability when they get the chance.

"This tournament is all about winning, and everyone buys in, even if they’re only playing two shifts a period."

Elsewhere on the second day of action, the Czech Republic failed to build on their scintillating opening day win over reigning champions Finland as they stumbled to a 4-3 defeat to Switzerland in Group A at Centre Bell in Montreal.

Nico Hischier scored the overtime winner and added two assists as the Swiss opened their campaign in style.

Captain Calvin Thurkauf added a goal while Loic In Albon and Damien Riat also scored for Switzerland.

Swiss goalkepeer Joren van Pottelberghe shone with 36 saves but Filip Chlapik scored twice for the Czechs and Radek Koblizek added a single.

Meanwhile, William Boysen, David Madsen and Joachim Blichfeld were all on target for Denmark as they produced a stunning 3-2 upset over defending champions Finland in Group A in Montreal.

The Finnish team lost their opening match yesterday and continued their poor start by losing once more.

Danish goalkeeper Kasper Krog made a sublime 34 stops in the victory but Urho Vaakanainen and Kasper Bjorkqvist did manage to break through to recover some pride.

In the fourth and final match of today, Russia recovered from their opening day defeat to thump Latvia 9-1 in Group A in Toronto.

Kirill Kaprizov led the way with a hat-trick and two assists, while Alexander Polunin scored two goals and Mikhail Vorobyov provided four assists as the trio ran riot.

Damil Yurtaikin, Pavel Karnaukhov, Kirill Belyayev and Yakov Trenin were also on target for Russia.

Action continues tomorrow with two matches.

Switzerland meet Sweden in Group A while the United States will aim to maintain their 100 per cent record as they take on Slovakia.
