The amount of floorball clubs in Denmark has risen by 20 per cent during the course of 2016 – figures from the sport’s national governing body have revealed.

Floorball Denmark bosses are celebrating the growth, which equates to 40 new associations and clubs around the country.

Most of these have come from Danish Gymnastic and Sports Associations (DGI) adding floorball to their club activities.

Meanwhile, overall membership has increased by 7.5 per cent over the last 12 months.

“We sincerely hope that new local associations are able to establish themselves as floorball clubs all with a stable and sustainable membership and step-by-step build on this solid foundation,” said Thorbjorn Ovedal, President of Floorball Denmark.

“Continuity, patience and continuous coaching is key to securing a successful journey for Floorball Denmark.”

The governing body has been working alongside DGIs around Denmark to get more people playing the sport.

This has included focusing on three different types of floorball – recreational, school and family – and identifying clubs as “spearheads” to help others.

“It is of vital importance that we continue to work strategically and in an orderly and structured fashion when it comes to our clubs and the membership potential which lies within them,” Ovedal added.

“But it is of equal importance to target the potential growth within the Danish population as a whole.

“In 2017, the focus will be in using the spearhead-associations to make even more people aware of this option.”

At the men’s International Floorball Federation World Championship, Denmark’s best finish is fourth place, which they achieved in 1998 and 2000.

In the women’s equivalent, their best finish was sixth place in 2007.
