Paralympic gold medallist Jiske Griffioen is one of five athletes shortlisted for the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Allianz Athlete of the Month Award for December after successfully defending her NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters women’s singles title last month.

The 31-year-old Dutchwoman, who won the women’s singles and doubles crowns at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, claimed a convincing 6-4, 6-4 victory over Japan’s Yui Kamiji in the final at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

Victory for the world number one, who earlier today was confirmed as an entrant for the Australian Open, ensured her third triumph at the prestigious event having also come out on top in 2012 and 2015.

Among the other athletes nominated for the December prize is France’s Arthur Bauchet, who posted the two fastest runs in the men’s standing giant slalom on his IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup debut in St. Moritz in Switzerland.

The 16-year-old also topped the podium in the second men’s standing giant slalom, held the following day, and a slalom race.

Completing the list of nominees is para-ice hockey player Steve Cash of the United States, American Nordic skier Oksana Masters and German table tennis player Thomas Schmidberger.

Goaltender Cash was named the player of the game as the US beat hosts Canada 5-2 in Charlottetown for their third straight World Sledge Hockey Challenge title.

Masters has a 100 per cent winning record after taking three wins in cross-country women's sitting at the IPC Para Nordic Skiing World Cup in Finnish village Vuokatti, while Schmidberger won the gold medal in the men’s class three singles and also in class four to five team events at the Para Table Tennis US Open in Las Vegas.

The public has until 1pm (CET) next Friday (January 13) to vote for the athlete they want to be the Allianz Athlete of the Month for December.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations.
