The competition is due to take place on October 19 will be held at the Copper Box Arena, the venue for handball and modern pentathlon events at the 2012 Olympics and goalball matches at the 2012 Paralympics, and will take place alongside the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Grand Prix series.

It comes two months after the sport’s global governing body announced Manchester will host the 2019 World Taekwondo Championship.

Mark Abberley, chief executive of British Taekwondo, said having the  Para tournament come to the country is an "exciting opportunity".

"We are already at the point of developing some meaningful strategies for Paralympic and disability sport within British Taekwondo and the opportunity to connect these to a world class event is truly ground-breaking for everyone in the organisation," he said.

WTF President Chungwon Choue said he was delighted that the Championships will take place in London, adding that he thinks it will mark the "perfect start”" to the sport’s Paralympic cycle heading to its debut on the programme at Tokyo in 2020. 

"Para Taekwondo has developed extensively in the past few years and I am certain that London and GB Taekwondo will provide the perfect stage for the athletes to perform, in what is expected to be the biggest para taekwondo event to date," Choue said.

Alongside the standard Para taekwondo categories, there will also be Poomsae competitions for athletes with intellectual or motor impairments at the event.

Samsun in Turkey hosted the last World Championships in September 2015.
