Dominik Paris will be looking to extend the overall International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup downhill lead he gained last weekend as Garmisch-Partenkirchen stages the latest leg of the competition.

The Italian leaped in front of his rivals in the standings with victory in the Austrian resort of Kitzbuhel on Saturday and is part of the starting line-up heading to Germany.

He is on 142 points in the downhill leaderboard, two more than Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal and a further point in front of another Italian, Peter Fill.

There will be two runs of downhill skiing, the first tomorrow and the second on Saturday (January 28), before attention moves to giant slalom on Sunday (January 29).

In the overall World Cup standings, Austria’s defending champion Marcel Hirscher leads the way on 1,160 and heads to Garmisch-Partenkirchen having won the giant slalom there in 2015.

Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen is second with the gap being 368 points, while France’s Alexis Pinturault is third on 713.

Italian resort Cortina d’Ampezzo is the host venue for the latest women’s World Cup stage with a downhill race on Saturday followed by a super-G on Sunday.

Last year, the United States’ Lindsey Vonn won both races there and is a credible threat again after winning the downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on January 21 in what was her second event since returning from a lengthy injury spell.

Her team-mate Mikaela Shiffrin is top of the overall World Cup leaderboard on 1,053, 130 points in front of Switzerland’s Lara Gut.

Tessa Worley of France is third on 688.
