Nevin Galmarini saw off defending International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup champion Radoslav Yankov to win today’s parallel giant slalom event in Rogla – his first success after 88 attempts.

The 30-year-old Swiss boarder, who won silver in the same event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, outpaced the Bulgarian in the final on the Slovenian resort by 0.12sec for his maiden World Cup victory.

En route to the final, Galmarini defeated South Korea’s Sang-Kyum Kim, Frenchman Sylvain Dufour and Zan Kosir of Slovenia to set up the showdown with Yankov.

After securing his first win, Galmarini said it felt “unbelievable”.

“It’s so special and very important for me,” he said.

“Every summer I train so hard, doing it to finally win a World Cup race.

“Now this dream has come true and I’m super happy.”

Kosir completed the podium line-up after beating Austria’s Andreas Prommegger in the small final.

World Cup leader Benjamin Karl of Austria had to settle for seventh place today, but still remains in charge of the standings.

In the women’s event, world champion Ester Ledecka of Czech Republic mastered the Slovenian course for the second consecutive year as she topped the podium again.

Ledecka defeated Germany’s Carolin Langenhorst in the final while Ina Meschik won an all-Austrian battle in the third-place race against Claudia Riegler.

Victory today means Ledecka has now gone ahead of Meschik in the parallel giant slalom World Cup leaderboard.
