The Brazilian Minister of Sport, Leonardo Picciani, has said here today that his country would welcome the chance to host the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games next year.

A host is yet to be revealed for next year's edition of the event but organisers are hoping to announce a venue within "the next 90 days".

"We have the intention to host the World Surfing Games maybe next year in the city of Búzios," Picciani said.

"It is a fantastic city in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

"Our confederation is talking to the ISA and we have strong support from our Government."

However, ISA President Fernando Aguerre revealed that Japan were interested in hosting the event while there are two other candidates in the Americas and in Europe.

Japan's Okuragahama Beach will play host to this year's World Junior Championship between September 23 and October 1, with the country aiming to add a second major surfing event before the sport's Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.

It was revealed by Aguerre yesterday that next year's World Surfing Games will be part of the Tokyo 2020 qualification process.

However, the ISA have not yet approved a concrete plan.

Surfing was added to the Olympic sports programme for Tokyo 2020 in August 2016, after decades of ISA campaigning.

The first World Surfing Games since the sport's Olympic admission is taking place here.

Picciani claims that although he was disappointed the sport did not appear at Rio 2016, he is sure that it will be a welcome addition at Tokyo 2020.

"The Olympic Games in Rio was a fantastic experience but we did not have surfing [in the Olympics] yet," he said.

"But, we are happy that it is now in the Olympic programme and we are sure that in Tokyo it will be a great success."
