The South Korean fencers were once again in commanding form, wrapping up both the women's sabre and men's épée titles at the AsiaWorld-Expo.

The women's sabre team came into the competition looking to improve on the silver medal they won at last year's Asian Championships and they did exactly that, beating Japan in the final.

Hong Seo-in, Jeon Hee-seok, Kim Mi-na and Nam Hyun-hee delivered the title for South Korea with a clinical display in a 45-30 triumph.

China, the defending champions, denied the host nation a podium finish as they beat Hong Kong 39-26 in the bronze medal play-off.

They officially lost their grip on their title when they were beaten 45-24 by Japan, while South Korea reached the final by overcoming Hong Kong 45-34.

South Korea then prevailed in the men's team épée competition, following in the footsteps of their women's sabre team-mates by bettering the silver medal they claimed in Wuxi in China in 2016.

The team of Jung Jin-sun, Kweon Young-jun, Park Kyoung-doo and Park Sang-young ensured they took the crown as they proved too strong for their Chinese opponents.

South Korea had booked their place in the tournament's showpiece encounter by edging Hong Kong 45-40.

Japan, winners of the event last year, were narrowly beaten by the same margin by China in the other semi-final.

The hosts again failed to claim a medal as Japan earned bronze with a 45-30 win.

The event in Hong Kong continues tomorrow.
