Estonia earned the women’s team épée title on the last day of action at the International Fencing Federation World Championships for the first time in their history in Leipzig.

The nation has had individual world champions in épée on four occasions, most recently with Julia Beljajeva in the women’s event in 2013.

Beljajeva, who won bronze in the individual already at Arena Leipzig, joined up with Kristina Kuusk, Erika Kirpu and Irina Embrich in the team event.

They progressed through to the gold medal match, after earning a 12-11 quarter-final win over hosts Germany, before beating Poland 37-27.

The Estonian team then secured the gold medal by seeing off the challenge of China, winning the final by a 45-33 score.

Bronze was earned by Poland as they beat South Korea 33-28.
