Egypt claimed a sixth consecutive women’s title at the World Squash Federation Junior Championships with their victory against Malaysia in New Zealand today.

The African country, the competition’s top seeds, came through the encounter at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre in Tauranga with successes for Hania El Hammamy and Rowan Reda Araby handing them a 2-0 win.

El Hammamy came up against Sivasangari Subramaniam in the opening match of the final and the Egyptian took both the opening two games 11-8.

Subramaniam fought back to take the third 11-6, only for her opponent, the runner-up in the women’s single competition which finished on Monday (July 24), rounded the rubber off with a 11-9 score in the fourth.

Araby, who defeated El Hammamy in the singles final, also needed four games to see off Andrea Lee in the second rubber.

She eventually finished the job off in 37 minutes with the score at 11-4, 11-4, 9-11, 11-7 to hand Egypt the title on her 17th birthday.

England and Hong Kong, the losing teams from the semi-finals, both take home bronze medals.

The United States ended the tournament in fifth place after beating India 2-1 in a playoff, while hosts New Zealand finished seventh after a 2-0 win against Germany.

Canada claimed ninth place with a 3-0 victory over Australia and South Africa came 11th after a walkover against South Korea.
