Japan and Russia won two gold medals each today as women’s events took centre stage at the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships in Finnish city Tampere.

The East Asian nation’s first triumph at the Tampere Exhibition and Sports Center came in the 44 kilograms category as Manami Ueno beat China’s Yumei Chen 14-4 in the final. 

The bronze medal matches saw the United States’ Oveionce Tanyia Ray defeat Canada’s Alexia Adeline Devalmont Seal 10-2 and Romania’s Stefania Claudia Priceputu overcome Bulgaria’s Fatme Ibraimova Mandeva 8-6. 

Japan’s second victory of the day was secured by Yuzuru Kumano, who sealed the defence of her 59kg crown with an 8-2 win over Moldova’s Anastasia Nichita. 

In the bronze medal matches, India’s Kumari Manju defeated Ukraine’s Ilona Prokopevniuk 2-0 and Norway’s Grace Jacob Bullen overcame China’s Jing Jiang 9-3.

Russia’s gold medals were won in the 51kg and 67kg categories with Kseniia Nezgovorova triumphing in the former and Khanum Velieva in the latter.

Defending champion Nezgovorova beat Ukraine’s Khrystyna Bereza 5-1 in their final, while Velieva defeated Cuba’s Yudari Sanchez Rodriguez 9-7. 

The 51kg bronze medal matches saw Mongolia’s Bolor Erdene Bat Orshikh overcame the US’ Cameron Jaylynn Guerin 12-2 and China’s Xuejiao Liao beat Japan’s Nao Taniyama 10-0.

Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova defeated Norway’s Hedda Haug Strand 10-0 in the first 67kg bronze medal match before Romania’s Alexandra Nicoleta Anghel overcame Japan's Naruha Matsuyuki 7-2.   

Competition in the remaining four women’s wrestling categories - 48kg, 55kg, 63kg and 72kg - will be held tomorrow.
