The Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) has highlighted the case of a 21-year-old refugee who has taken up the sport.

Andrew, who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, fled his home country at the age of two and is now living with his family at the Kiziba Refugee Camp in Rwanda.

He joined the THF programme at the camp last spring and he now regularly takes part in regional competitions.

"Since I started practicing taekwondo, my social life has boosted and I have been able to meet many new people from other communities," he said.

With taekwondo helping with health and fitness, Andrew also studies at the camp.

The THF aims to teach the sport and related educational programmes to refugees and displaced persons worldwide.

As well as Rwanda, projects have been set up in Jordan, Turkey, Djibouti and Nepal.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue officially announced his plan to establish the THF in his speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York City on the 2015 International Day of Peace.
