More than 3,000 competitors will be in Penticton in Canada for the first International Triathlon Union Multisport World Championships.

The event will see the first races start tomorrow and will continue in the British Columbian city until August 27.

Organisers have stated that 3,002 athletes from 41 countries have entered the competition, which will feature various levels of ability from youth to elite along with Para-triathlon.

Athletes are allowed to enter as many of the races in their category as they like, although only one person, Denmark’s Karsten Olsen, has entered all five.

World titles will be available in five multisport races.

Duathlon will take centre stage tomorrow with athletes doing 10 kilometre and 5km runs with a 40.5km bike ride sandwiched in the middle.

Cross triathlon, consisting of a 1.5km swim, 31km cycle and 2.5km run, will be staged on Wednesday (August 23), before the aquathlon title will be decided two days later.

The latter features 1km swim and 5km run.

The final day will see the long course triathlon – a 3km swim, 120km bike ride and 30km run – and aquabike race – a 3km swim followed by a 120km bike ride – round off proceedings.
