Hosts Germany were denied a final flourish as they lost the fifth-place play-off to Turkey at the International Blind Sports Federation European Football Championships in Berlin.

The home side had suffered disappointment when they failed to progress past the group stage of the tournament at the Lilli-Henoch-Sportplatz, and wanted to end on a positive note today.

It was not to be as Turkey prevailed via a penalty shoot-out after the clash in the capital city finished 0-0.

Turkey won 2-1 on spot kicks but the result was bittersweet for them as they have now relinquished their European crown after starting the tournament as defending champions.

In other classification matches, Italy edged Belgium 1-0 for seventh position.

Romania saw off Georgia 3-1 to avoid the wooden spoon and finish ninth.

The final will be played between Spain and Russia tomorrow.

England and France will also clash in the third-place play-off.
