The 27-year-old claimed a narrow 3-2 victory over the reigning Olympic champion, against whom he lost in the gold medal match two years ago.

It secured Cuba their fifth and final triumph as the country comfortably topped the overall medal standings.

Light flyweight Joahnys Argilagos gave the Caribbean nation the perfect start by overcoming Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan 3-2 to seal the defence of his world title.

Yosbany Veitia secured Cuba’s second title of the night with a unanimous points win over another Uzbek, Jasurbek Latipov, in the flyweight final.

Victory ensured Veitia improved on his silver medal-winning performance from the 2015 World Championships, which were held in Qatar's capital Doha.

Uzbekistan were again on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline against Cuba in the light welterweight final as Ikboljon Kholdarov fell at the hands of Andy Cruz Gomez.

Julio César La Cruz boosted Cuba’s gold medal tally further by clinching his fourth consecutive world light heavyweight crown with a unanimous points success over Ireland’s Joseph Ward, the man he also beat in the 2015 final and 2013 semi-finals.

A superb night was complete when Savón edged Tishchenko, but Cuba did not have everything their own way with losing finalists in the lightweight and welterweight categories.

Lázaro Álvarez Estrada was denied what would have been a third consecutive world title at lightweight and fourth in all after succumbing to a 5-0 defeat against Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Sofiane Oumiha of France.

Compatriot Roniel Iglesias was beaten by the same scoreline in his welterweight final with Uzbekistan’s Shakhram Giyasov, who prevented a fourth final defeat for his country.

Among the other gold medallists was bantamweight Kairat Yeraliyev of Kazakhstan thanks to a 3-2 win over the United States’ Duke Ragan.

Middleweight Abilkhan Amankul and super heavyweight Kamshybek Kunkabayev both missed opportunities to add to Kazakhstan's tally. 

Amankul was beaten 5-0 in his final by impressive Ukrainian Oleksandr Khyzhniak, while Kunkabayev lost 4-1 to the now three-time world champion Mahammadrasul Majidov of Azerbaijan in the last contest of the event.

Khyzhniak was named the best boxer of the Championships in the immediate aftermath of competition concluding.

The sixth seed rarely looked in any trouble as he put together a brilliant run.

Cuba were unsurprisingly named the best team, while Billy Walsh was awarded the best coach accolade after guiding the US to three medals.

USA Boxing had managed just one bronze medal in the previous three World Championships. 

Walsh was appointed after the 2015 edition having built Irish boxing back up to be a global force once more.

Light welterweight Freudis Rojas and middleweight Troy Isley both won bronzes for the US at this year's event, adding to Ragan's silver.

The Closing Ceremony also saw the AIBA flag passed to Russian Boxing Federation general secretary Umar Kremliov, who will oversee the organisation of the 2019 World Championships in Sochi.
