A 40 sport and 462 event programme for the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang received final approval during a coffee break after prolonged debate at an Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Executive Board meeting here today.

The final selection includes every sport set to feature on the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020, except for surfing.

Others due to be contested are bowling, bridge, jetski, kabaddi, martial arts, paragliding, roller sports and sepak takraw.

Today's meeting confirmed a proposal made in April to cut cricket and sambo from the initial list of sports.

But the final number of events represented a significant increase on the 431 announced earlier this year.

The 462 total is the second biggest in the history of the Asian Games - after the 476 which appeared at Guangzhou in 2010 - and represents a huge increase on the 321 scheduled for Tokyo 2020.

Skateboarding is due to be contested as a discipline of roller sports while soft tennis will take place within tennis.

It is thought that the increase in events since the April total took place after International Federations (IFs)  raised concerns that events on the Olympic programme were missing out.

Indonesian organisers initially announced that there were 38 sports being contested as they were hoping to amalgamate paragliding, jet ski and roller sports together under the banner of "extreme sports" in order to reduce the quota.

This proposal was rejected by Coordination Commission chair Tsunekazu Takeda.

Protracted discussion then took place during a coffee break between the Japanese IOC member, OCA Sports Director Haider Farman and Jakarta 2018 representatives before a consensus was reached.

The 40 sport figure is still disingenuous, however, because the four martial arts of ju-jitsu, kurash, wushu and pencak silat are grouped together as one sport.

Other new Olympic disciplines, such as 3x3 basketball and BMX freestyle, are also included.

Cricket had featured at the last two editions while surfing and sambo had each been targeting a first appearance.

The sports programme was confirmed during a wide-ranging update on preparations with less than a year to go until the Games are scheduled to begin on August 18.

Officials insisted there had been good progress regarding the construction of venues and the Athletes' Village and promised all would be ready by the deadline of April.

But concerns were raised by OCA honorary life vice-president Wei Jizhong.

The former International Volleyball Federation chief raised concerns over the quality of facilities meeting the minimum standards of IFs as well as regarding training facilities and volunteer programmes.

OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah also announced today that they have agreed a deal in which Jakarta and Palembang 2018 will pay the continental body $40 million (£29.60 million/€33.4 million) in order to assume full control of sponsorship and marketing rights.

They will then be able to keep all profits generated from these programme - including any excess over the $40 million.

This followed a meeting between the Kuwaiti and Indonesian officials during last month's China National Games in Tianjin and Luoyang.

It follows similar agreements signed before Guangzhou 2010 and Incheon 2014.

A separate $3 million (£2.2 million/€2.5 million) fee must be paid by organisers to OCA marketing partner Dentsu in order to cover extras such as legal costs and measures to avoid ambush marketing.

The OCA have also agreed to cover ticketing costs for all athletes attending if organisers are unsuccessful in securing an airline partner.
