Paralympic champion David Smith reached the last eight of the BC1 event at the Boccia International Federation (BISFed) European Championships in Portugal.

Britain's Rio 2016 gold medallist secured a 13-0 win over Israel’s Orit Kelner in his first Pool A match at the Municipal Pavilion in Póvoa de Varzim.

He then claimed a 5-1 win over Portugal’s Joao Pinto to secure progress to the last eight.

Smith is now set to meet Spain’s Ferran Valdivia in the quarter-finals.

The Netherlands’ Daniel Perez, a silver medallist at Rio 2016, progressed to face Panagiotis Soulanis of Greece.

Portugal's home hope António Marques, ranked fourth in the event, is scheduled to meet Russia’s Mikhail Gutnik.

The hosts could be on course for success in the BC2 competition, with three of their athletes having progressed from the group stage.

Top seed Abílio Valente won both of his pool matches to secure a meeting with Hasan Çakır of Turkey in the last 16.

Nelson Fernandes and Cristina Gonçalves also reached the knock-out stage, with the Portuguese pair due to meet The Netherlands’ Nick Peeters and Dmitry Kozmin of Russia respectively.

Greece’s Grigorios Polychronidis, the Rio 2016 silver medallist, progressed to the BC3 knock-out stage with two wins.

He is due to play Pieter Cilissen of Belgium for a place in the last eight.

Rio 2016 bronze medallist Jose Carlos Macedo also remains in contention, with the Portuguese player set to meet Samir van der Beken of France.

A total of 112 athletes from 22 countries are competing in the Championships.
