London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom of India advanced to the light flyweight quarter-finals after comfortably beating home favourite Diem Thi Trinh Kieu on the opening day of the Asian Women's Boxing Championships in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

Kom, a five-time world champion and four-time Asian Championships winner, triumphed 4-1 on points at the Nguyen Du Indoor Stadium.

Awaiting her in the last eight is Chinese Taipei's Meng-Chieh Pin, who got the better of Thailand's Panpradab Plodsai in her opening bout.

The home nation tasted success in their two other bouts today with bantamweight Le Thi Bang defeating Japan’s Aya Shinmoto 5-0 and lightweight Luu Thi Duyen overcoming Uzbekistan’s Raykhona Kodirova by the same scoreline.

Action in Ho Chi Minh City is due to continue tomorrow when Rio 2016 silver medallist Yin Junhua begins her featherweight campaign.

The Chinese boxer will fight 2014 world silver medallist Nesthy Petecio of The Philippines in what is one of the most eagerly-anticipated first-round contests.

The competition is the eighth edition of the event first held in Thailand's capital Bangkok in 2001.

Chinese city Wulanchabu played host in 2015.
