Swiss rower Jeannine Gmelin, South African Kirsten McCann and crews from all over Europe, South Africa and Australia are in line for World Rowing's prestigious 2017 awards.

Success at this year’s World Rowing Championships in the United States helped determine the finalists for the 2017 World Rowing Awards.

Over one thousand nominations were received from the public which went to the World Rowing Federation’s Council to select the finalists. 

The award winners will be announced on Friday December 8 with the winners honoured at a gala dinner during the 2017 World Rowing Coaches Conference in London.

Crews from Italy, Lithuania, The Netherlands and Romania join Gmelin and McCann in the running for the World Rowing Female Crew of the Year.

The finalists are: Italy's Lightweight Women’s Quadruple Sculls: Asja Maregotto, Paola Piazzolla, Federica Cesarini and Giovanna Schettino; Lithuania's Women’s Double Sculls: Milda Valciukaite, Ieva Adomaviciute; Netherlands, Women’s Quadruple Sculls:  Olivia van Rooijen, Inge Janssen, Sophie Souwer, Nicole Beukers; Romania's Women’s Eight: Ioana Vrinceanu, Viviana-Iuliana Bejinariu, Mihaela Petrila, Iuliana Popa, Madalina Beres, Denisa Tilvescu, Adelina Bogus, Laura Oprea, Daniela Druncea, coxswain; Lightweight Women’s Single Sculls: Kirsten McCann, South Africa; and Women’s Single Sculls: Jeannine Gmelin, Switzerland.

Finalists for 2017 World Rowing Male Crew of the Year are: Australia's Men’s Four: Joshua Hicks, Spencer Turrin, Jack Hargreaves, Alexander Hill; Ondrej Synek, of the Czech Republic, in the Men’s Single Sculls; France's Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls: Pierre Houin and Jeremie Azou; Germany's Men’s Eight: Johannes Weissenfeld, Felix Wimberger, Maximilian Planer, Torben Johannesen, Jakob Schneider, Malte Jakschik, Richard Schmidt, Hannes Ocik, Martin Sauer, coxswain, and the Italian Men's Pair of Matteo Lodo and Giuseppe Vicino.

Ireland coach Dominic Casey has been shortlisted for 2017 World Rowing Coach of the Year and also for Distinguished Services to International Rowing.

The man who coached Paul and Gary O’Donovan to a silver medal in Rio last summer is up against France's Alexis Besancon, Francesco Cattaneo, Italy, Josy Verdonkschot, Netherlands and Antonio Colamonici, of Romania.

Finalists for 2017 World Rowing Distinguished Services to International Rowing are: John Boultbee, Australia, Morten Espersen, Denmark, Juergen Grobler, Great Britain, Dominic Casey, Ireland and Nicholas Ee, Singapore.

Finalists for 2017 World Rowing Para Crew of the Year are: Erik Horrie, Australia, Para PR1 Men’s Single Sculls; Diana Barcelos de Oliveira, Jairo Klug, Brazil, Para PR3 Mixed Double Sculls; Annika van der Meer, Corne de Koning, Netherlands, Para PR2 Mixed Double Sculls; Birgit Skarstein, Norway, Para PR1 Women’s Single Sculls.
