Priscilla Ribic triumphed in the women's under-72kg event ©IPF

Priscilla Ribic secured the United States' first gold medal of the International Powerlifting Federation Open World Championships, which continued today in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

The American lifter came out on top of a highly competitive women’s under-72 kilogram event at the Parkhotel Congress Center, with five women in contention for the three medals on offer.

Ribic opened her competition by achieving a lift of 240kg in the squat portion of the event, but she starred in the final two disciplines.

A world record lift of 165kg placed Ribic in contention for the gold, which she sealed by achieving a new mark of 249kg in the deadlift.

The efforts gave the American an overall total of 654kg, which proved enough to win the gold.

Norway’s Marte Elverum was forced to settle for the silver medal, having ended on a tally of 642.5kg.

The podium was completed by Canada’s Rhaea Stinn, who scored 635kg.

Ukraine’s impressive Championships continued when Dmytro Semenenko triumphed in the men’s 105kg event.

Semenenko produced a junior world record squat of 445.5kg to begin the competition in style, before lifting 302.5kg in the bench press.

He concluded the event with a deadlift of 342.5kg to finish with a world record total of 1,090kg.

Silver was also claimed by a Ukrainian lifter, with Oleksandr Rubets managing 1,070kg across the disciplines.

Kazakhstan’s Zalim Kuvambayev secured bronze on a total of 1,370kg.
