The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan (Kazakhstan NOC) hosted the award ceremony in the grand ballroom of the Hilton Astana hotel in Astana on November 30 with winners being chosen by public vote.

Road race cyclist Alexey Lutsenko won the Best Summer Sport Athlete award following an excellent year which saw him win the Tour of Almaty, the fifth stage of the Vuelta a Españaand come third in the 2017 Dwars door Vlaanderen.

After picking up his award, Lutsenko said: "I had a very good season and I am glad I could gain points for the Kazakhstani cycling team.

"I think every athlete who puts their soul and effort into victory is worth an award.

"Thanks to the National Olympic Committee and thanks to everyone who voted for me."

The Best Winter Sport Athlete award went to Zhanbota Aldabergenova, a freestyle skier who took a silver medal at the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty.

The award for Best Young Athlete was given to 17-year-old figure skater Elizabet Tursynbaeva following her bronze medal at the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo in Japan.

"This amazing support before the Games is very inspiring as it means that people like what I do," said Tursynbaeva.

"I would like to say thank you to all my supporters who voted for me.

"All my efforts are now dedicated to getting ready for the Olympic Games in South Korea."

Myrzagali Aytzhanov and Madygali Karsybekov won the Best Summer Sports Coach and Best Winter Sports Coach respectively for their work in boxing and short track speed skating.

The Kazakhstan Triathlon Federation won the Best National Federation award whilst Almaty won the Best Sports Region prize by 1,000 votes, ahead of South Kazakhstan.

Breakthrough of the Year was won by the Kazakhstan archery team, winners of the recurve men’s event at the Archery World Cup in Shanghai.

FC Astana took the Team of the Year award following their success in making the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.

In addition to the main awards, boxer Gennady Golovkin, the 2004 Olympic silver medallist and who is unbeaten in 38 professional fights and currently holds four middleweight titles, was given a special Kazakhstan Sports Legacy award.

As Golovkin could not be at the ceremony, his mother collected the award on his behalf from Kazakhstan NOC President Timur Kulibayev.

She expressed her pride at her son’s award.

"As a mother, I am always happy to see the support and love for my son in our country," she said.

"This support means a lot to him.

"I want Kazakhstani sports to keep on reaching new heights and I wish you all success in the future.

Kazakhstan NOC President Timur Kulibayev believes that the public voting system for the awards was a major part of their success.

"The National Sports Awards became truly national this year and all the nominees were shown to have the support of the public and that they are loved and known," he said.

"I would like to say that all our nominees deserve to be called ‘the best’ as they have contributed enormously to the development of Kazakhstani sport this year.

"On behalf of the National Olympic Committee, I would like to thank Kazakhstan for showing support to the athletes, national teams and the Olympic Movement in our country.

"The Olympic season is coming, and I would like to wish our athletes success in the future."
