Australia’s Edwina Tops-Alexander and her mare California have won the seventh leg of the Longines International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) World Cup Jumping 2017/2018 Western European League event at the Santiago Varela track in La Coruna, Spain.

Following home rider Manuel Fernandez Saro’s time of 43.89 earlier in the day, Australian Tops-Alexander secured victory in comfortable fashion in an impressive time of 40.08 seconds in an event that saw eight competitors from eight countries taking part.

After her win, Tops-Alexander said: "California has been jumping great, but here and there we kept having stupid faults and I was getting a bit mad.

“I was determined to have a good class here yesterday, but it didn’t work.

“Today I did my best and it did work, so now I’m really happy."

However, the 43-year-old also implied that she was not entirely satisfied by her own performance.

“I did one too many strides from fence 1 to fence 2, but that just made me go faster the rest of the way.

“I wasn’t convinced I was quick enough to win, I thought maybe I’d be second if I was lucky.”

The silver medal was taken by Austria’s Max Kuhner, who trailed Tops-Alexander by more than two seconds with a time of 42.33 later in the day, whilst Fernandez Saro’s earlier time of 43.89 was enough to secure bronze.

The Longines FEI World Cup Jumping campaign will continue in Bordeaux, France, in February before moving onto Gothenburg, Sweden later in the month.
